System Mechanical Engineer
About the Job
As a System Mechanical Engineer, you will support the definition, integration, testing, and support of mechanical and onboard systems for passenger and freight rolling stock projects. You’ll work closely with senior system engineers and multidisciplinary teams across all phases of the project lifecycle, from concept development and design to manufacturing support, in-service troubleshooting, and refurbishment.
What You’ll Be Doing
This role operates in a delivery-driven rail environment where coordination is complex and responsiveness is critical. You will be expected to manage multiple priorities and support sound technical decisions under schedule pressure, without compromising safety, quality, or compliance.
Key responsibilities
-
Support the development of system-level requirements, interfaces, and performance criteria for mechanical and onboard systems (HVAC, braking, pneumatics, mechanical interfaces, communications).
-
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and designers to align design outputs with system requirements.
-
Support coordination of cross-disciplinary system interfaces with mechanical, electrical, structural, and software engineering teams.
-
Assist with functional performance analysis and system-level risk assessments (e.g., FMEA, hazard analysis).
-
Prepare and maintain system documentation, including interface control documents (ICDs), system descriptions, and technical notes.
-
Review supplier documentation and component data under guidance of senior engineers.
- Participate in testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and validation of vehicles and systems.
-
Support development of verification and validation plans, test procedures, and certification-related documentation.
This role requires strong technical fundamentals, attention to detail, and the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic, deadline-driven rail environment.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Member of OIQ (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec) or eligible for registration.
- 3–7 years of experience in mechanical engineering, systems engineering, or transportation-related projects.
- Exposure to rolling stock systems or complex mechanical assemblies is an asset.
- Familiarity with railway standards and regulatory environments (APTA, AAR, EN, UIC, Transport Canada) is an asset.
- Proficiency with CAD tools and engineering documentation practices.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with multiple stakeholders.
- Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
How You Work
- You are structured, detail-oriented, and technically curious.
- You collaborate well across disciplines and ask the right questions.
- You stay effective under time pressure and shifting priorities.
- You balance technical rigor with delivery realities.
- You take ownership of your work and follow through.
Working Conditions
- Full-time (40 hours/week), Monday to Friday.
- On-site presence at the CRWS Montréal office.
- Occasional travel and site visits depending on project needs.
- Flexibility required to meet project deadlines typical of the rail industry.
