Mechanical Designer

About the Role

As a Mechanical Designer, you will support engineering and production teams by developing accurate 3D models, layouts, and technical drawings for rolling stock and rail-related projects. You will work closely with mechanical, structural, and systems engineers throughout the project lifecycle, from concept development and layout design to manufacturing support, installation, and field revisions. This role requires strong technical drafting capabilities, responsiveness, and the ability to manage multiple drawing packages while maintaining high quality and documentation standards.

Key responsibilities
  • Develop 3D models and 2D technical drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Produce part, assembly, fabrication, and installation drawings.
  • Prepare layouts for client review and internal coordination.
  • Revise and update drawings to reflect design changes and field conditions.
  • Support preliminary layouts, material take-offs, and cost-estimating activities.
  • Coordinate layouts involving mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and auxiliary systems when required.
  • Deliver complete drawing packages supporting manufacturing, installation, and refurbishment activities.
  • Support research and development, tooling design, jigs, fixtures, and production aids.
  • Maintain organized and traceable engineering documentation according to company standards.
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Member of OIQ (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec) or eligible for registration.
  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering within rail, transportation, or related industries.
  • Strong understanding of rolling stock systems integration and relevant industry standards (APTA, AAR, EN, UIC, TC).
  • Experience managing mechanical and electrical subsystem interfaces.
  • Familiarity with lifecycle challenges and maintenance considerations for rolling stock.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools and systems-level documentation practices.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.

What We’re Looking For

  • Diploma or degree in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Intermediate or Senior Mechanical Designer with proven experience in mechanical design and technical drafting.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks is mandatory.
  • Experience producing fabrication, manufacturing, and installation drawings.
  • Strong understanding of assemblies, tolerances, manufacturing methods, and engineering documentation.
  • Experience in rail, transportation, manufacturing, industrial, or heavy-equipment environments is considered an asset.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, deadline-driven environment.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time position (40 hours per week).
  • On-site at CRWS’s Montréal office.
  • Occasional travel to project sites or client facilities.
  • Flexibility required to support project deadlines.
