About the Role

As a Senior Structural Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the design, analysis, validation, and optimization of structural and mechanical components for passenger and freight rail vehicles.

You will support projects throughout their lifecycle, from concept development and structural validation to manufacturing support, troubleshooting, and refurbishment. As a senior team member, you will provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and support key engineering decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of structural and mechanical components for rolling stock.
• Prepare and review engineering calculations, models, and technical documentation.
• Perform and validate structural assessments using hand calculations and FEA methods.
• Validate designs against applicable standards and regulations (APTA, AAR, Transport Canada, EN/UIC).
• Apply structural, manufacturing, and welding standards to support safe and compliant designs.
• Support testing, inspections, design reviews, and field investigations.
• Participate in troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
• Ensure engineering deliverables meet safety, quality, and compliance requirements.
• Collaborate with engineering, production, suppliers, and project teams.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

What We’re Looking For
Education

• Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Membership in the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or an equivalent Canadian provincial engineering regulatory body..

Experience & Technical Competencies

• 7+ years of relevant experience in rolling stock, rail transportation, or related engineering environments.
• Experience in heavy vehicles, structural design, or transportation engineering is considered an asset.
• Ability to perform and review load calculations, load paths, reaction forces, and structural design decisions.
• Strong knowledge of stress analysis, engineering mathematics, and structural calculations.
• Experience with 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
• Experience with structural analysis tools (e.g., HyperMesh, SimSolid).
• Strong understanding of weldments, fatigue design, bolted joints, and structural steel design.
• Familiarity with rolling stock maintenance and lifecycle challenges.
• Strong technical communication and reporting skills.
• Manufacturing experience is considered an asset.
• Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset.

Working Conditions

• Full-time position (40 hours/week).
• Monday to Friday schedule.
• On-site presence required at the CRWS Montréal office.
• Periodic site visits and field support activities.
